Key Stage 3

Intent:

At Brayton Academy, it is our intent to equip our students with the skills to:

  • To become successful linguists by developing, to a high standard, their competencies across all four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • To become resilient learners by using a carefully mapped out curriculum that allows students to regularly review and embed learning whilst increasing in complexity over time to promote strong progress. In lessons, we will ensure that all pupils are appropriately challenged to achieve their best by setting high expectations of what they are able to achieve and providing them with the support that they need to meet those goals.
  • To raise aspirations by building on and developing their cultural knowledge and language skills.
  • To make progress by using iterative assessment, both formative and summative, to continuously review and respond to learning and to aid retention over time.
  • To develop a lifelong skill by providing opportunities to communicate on topics that go beyond their immediate needs and interests. Students will learn to develop and justify their views on current global issues.

To be prepared for future study by building solid foundations right from the start of KS3 in grammar, vocabulary, and language skills

Key Stage 4

Our Year 11 students receive three lessons per week. The GCSE course focusses on developing students’ knowledge covering three specific themes in relation to the current specification from AQA:

Theme 1: Identity and Culture

Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest

Theme 3: Current and future study and employment

Students will work on a wide range of skills: listening, reading, speaking, translation and writing using authentic materials. They will develop their understanding of the language and be able to develop a skill for life.

Our Year 10 cohort will be covering three specific themes in relation to the new specification from AQA that will first be assessed in 2026:

Theme 1: People and Lifestyle

Theme 2: Popular Culture

Theme 3: Communication and the world around us

They will continue to receive 3 lessons per week and will develop a wide range of language skills: listening, reading, speaking, translation and writing using authentic materials.
