Relationship and Sex Education
Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) is about the emotional, social and cultural development of students, and involves learning about relationships, sexual health, sexuality, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity. RSE involves a combination of sharing information, and exploring issues and values. RSE is not about the promotion of sexual activity.
All students, in all year groups receive a comprehensive and age-appropriate programme via taught lessons and weekly assemblies. Year 7 and Year 8 receive one timetabled lesson per week of Relationships and Sex Education. The Year 9 programme allows for students to be taught in a block of three periods, every four weeks. This allows students to be fully emersed in the lesson and obtain a deeper understanding of the topic areas. Key Stage four students receive an individualised assembly each week, directly followed by two morning sessions to discuss and delve deeper into the topic presented in the assembly. More information around what each year group studies can be found on the Academy's Relationship and Sex Education Implementation document.
The aims of teaching RSE in our Academies is to:
- provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place;
- prepare students for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene;
- help students develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy;
- create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships;
- teach students the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies.
For further information about RSE please read the Academy RSE policy or contact the Office for further clarification.
